Hunger is a challenge no student should face, and at Gwynedd Mercy University, Catherine’s Cupboard provides students with access to food and critical items, empowering them to focus on their education and well-being. With its compassionate mission and impactful services, Catherine’s Cupboard exemplifies how a university can foster a community of care and support.
The program supports students through two cornerstone services. At Tabor House, students have access to a diverse selection of groceries and household essentials. These include shelf-stable foods, fresh produce, frozen meats, dairy products, personal care items, and even diapers for those with children. This wide variety ensures that students can meet their unique needs with dignity and ease. Students can conveniently RSVP for grocery pick-ups by emailing [email protected], selecting items that align with their specific needs. This flexibility not only makes the service more accessible but also allows students to maintain a sense of autonomy and control during challenging times. Thanks to funding from a CARES Act grant and partnership with the Montco Anti-Hunger Network (MAHN), these resources are completely free, reducing financial strain and promoting equity among students.
For immediate needs, Catherine’s Cupboard offers a self-serve pantry in Campbell Hall. This pantry, located in the breezeway near the Chapel, provides shelf-stable groceries and grab-and-go snacks, accessible whenever classes are in session, including Saturdays. Whether a student needs a quick bite between classes or a small meal to take home, the self-serve pantry ensures that support is always within reach. A donation box is also available at this location for members of the GMercyU community who wish to contribute and make a difference in the lives of their peers.
The program’s impact is amplified by the generosity of the GMercyU community. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to play an active role in supporting Catherine’s Cupboard by donating essential items such as shelf-stable groceries, healthy snacks, quick meals, toiletries, period products, diapers, and wipes. Each contribution, no matter the size, helps sustain this vital resource for students in need. Additionally, monetary donations can be made online, directly supporting the program’s mission to fight food insecurity and expand its services to reach even more students.
Beyond providing food, Catherine’s Cupboard is a symbol of the university’s commitment to fostering a culture of care and compassion. The program reflects Gwynedd Mercy University’s core values of mercy and service, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically and personally. It stands as a testament to the power of a supportive community, providing students with the tools they need to succeed and encouraging them to give back when they are able.
Moreover, the program’s reach extends beyond the immediate provision of food and items. It serves as an educational platform, raising awareness about the prevalence of food insecurity and inspiring action within the community. By engaging students, faculty, and staff in its mission, Catherine’s Cupboard cultivates a sense of shared responsibility and underscores the importance of addressing systemic challenges.
If you or someone you know is facing food insecurity, Catherine’s Cupboard is here to help. To RSVP for groceries, donate, or learn more about the program, email [email protected]. Together, as a united community, we can ensure that every student at GMercyU has the resources and support they need to achieve their goals. Hunger should never hinder education, and with Catherine’s Cupboard, we are making that vision a reality—one student at a time.
