Griffin Second Half Secures Sweep of Mighty Macs

Gwynedd Mercy University (14-9, 6-5) played Immaculata University (7-16, 4-6) for the second time in five days and completed a sweep of their Atlantic East Conference (AEC) rivals with tonight’s 92-88 triumph over the Mighty Macs. A much higher scoring affair than its predecessor, this one saw four Griffins in double figures. Senior guard Ty Jones (Harlem, N.Y.) was the highest among them with a game-high 23 points. He also recorded five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Graduate guard Matt O’Connor (Philadelphia, Pa.) offered 17 points, a rebound, five assists, and a steal, while graduate forward Donaven Spencer (Sicklerville, N.J.) contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Sophomore guard Aziz Parker (Westhampton, N.J.) was the fourth Griffin in double figures as he paired his 13 points with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Gwynedd Mercy University led for most of the first half, pacing Immaculata University by as many as 10 points, 19-9 (11:55), before the Mighty Macs tied the affair at 25-25 with 6:26 remaining. From there, Immaculata University led to 41-38 (0:00) halftime spread. After intermission, the Mighty Macs were able to expand their lead to 15 points, 58-43 (13:50), before the Griffins’ thunderous comeback knocked the deficit to single digits, 67-74, on a Parker three pointer with 6:44 to play and stole the advantage, 84-83, on a Spencer layup with 1:33 remaining. In the final 90 seconds, victory free throw kept the Griffins free from any Mighty Mac reprise.

Gwynedd Mercy University concludes their AEC and regular season on Wednesday, February 16, when they host Marywood University for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.
