GMercyU enjoyed an uptick in LGBTQIA+ events during Spring 2025, with a pride flag raising event on Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31st, and a pop-up with information on GLSEN’s annual “Day of (No) Silence” event.
Transgender Day of Visibility is an internationally recognized event, with organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) highlighting it as an important part in raising awareness about the transgender community.
GMercyU’s flag raising was a symbolic event that reflected the core values of the University. “It’s a visible display of the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy to be respecting and have dignity for every person” explained GMercyU’s President Deanne H. D’Emilio, JD.
Following the pride flag raising, GMercyU’s student engagement office held a pop-up event providing informational resources about the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network’s (GLSEN) annual “Day of (No) Silence.”
Maya Scheuerman, the President of GMercyU’s Pride Alliance, reaffirms the importance of these events on campus. “At the end of the day it’s all community. A community can provide those public reaffirmations, and a community can be on hand when you’re struggling with housing or getting access to foods which is what we can do to contribute to that.”
GMercyU has been recognized by the New Ways Ministry as an LGBTQIA+ friendly catholic school, with only 18 schools being recognized for this in the state of Pennsylvania. Further resources on support provided by GMercyU to LGBTQIA+ students can be found on their website.
