Many students walk across campus every day without realizing that one of its creative groups is right there. VoiceBox, Gwynedd Mercy University’s a cappella group, makes music using their voices, no instruments, no backing tracks, just vocals.
The group was founded by Grammy-nominated Carol Evans, a Gwynedd Mercy University professor and choir director of the “Voices of Gwynedd.” Her daughter, Aryssa, had participated in a cappella during her college years, which inspired the idea of creating an a cappella group alongside the choir.
Current director Ryan Wilson graduated from Westminster Choir College in December 2014 with a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance. “As a child, I heard a lot of music,” he said. His journey into music started when Carol Evans, also a minister of music at his church, encouraged him to sing.
VoiceBox sings a range of music using only their voices. As Ryan puts it, “A cappella shows that voices alone can create something.” Their performances have layered harmonies and vocal percussion, making a sound.
The group is open to students through an audition process. Members Arwen Rowan and Jen Eisemann find the experience musically and socially rewarding. Being in VoiceBox means being part of a tight knit community where creativity and teamwork thrive.
At its core VoiceBox is more than a singing group, it’s a team effort. Ryan explained, “You can’t create vocal harmony without getting along.”
VoiceBox, along with the Voices of Gwynedd, will perform their spring concerts on April 29 at 7:30 p.m. and May 1 at 8:30 p.m.
Beyond performances, VoiceBox is a unified expression of music and emotion. As Ryan said, “One voice can inspire. Many voices can transform.”
For students looking to join, VoiceBox offers a chance to grow musically and build connections. For those who just want to listen to their performances, they promise an unforgettable experience. VoiceBox is a group on campus that makes music using only their voices. They are an example of what can be achieved when people come together to create something beautiful.
