Students who participate in experiential learning opportunities are significantly more likely to feel prepared for the workforce, with graduates who complete internships reporting career relevant skill development at nearly twice the rate of those who do not, according to the Center for Engaged Learning.
That real world impact was on display with GMercyU’s Sport Management at the annual Uplifting Athletes event. Students created a welcoming, organized, and encouraging environment that allowed athletes to focus on performing their best. From managing registration to running social media coverage, their efforts showed how behind the scenes support can make a big difference.

For Allyssa Seifert, sophomore Sport Management major, one of the most rewarding parts of the day was greeting participants and helping with registration.
“I was checking people in all day and making sure everyone had the materials they needed for the event,” Allyssa said. “Seeing the athletes walk in and immediately feel welcomed and comfortable was great.”
In addition to registration, she helped answer questions from attendees and guided them to the right areas, making sure the flow of the event stayed smooth and organized. Other students served as greeters at the entrance, directed families to seating areas, and staffed the VIP check in table. They ensured that special guests, sponsors, and alumni were personally welcomed and had access to the correct spaces.
Registration volunteers handled waivers, distributed event shirts and materials, and managed last minute changes. Their attention to detail prevented delays and allowed the competition schedule to begin on time.
Every interaction throughout the day mattered. Whether greeting guests, assisting at registration, supporting VIP areas, or managing the silent auction, students were representing both the university and the event.
Managing the Silent Auction and Fundraising Efforts
Students played a key role in fundraising through the silent auction. They organized bid sheets, monitored tables, answered questions about auction items, and encouraged attendees to participate. Students learned how fundraising integrates into athletic events and how important these efforts are to supporting larger organizational goals. Their work helped create an engaging atmosphere while contributing to the event’s overall success.

Capturing the Event on Social Media
Kira Bradley, a senior in the program, focused on sharing the event’s highlights online and keeping the community engaged, posting updates throughout the day and capturing photos of athletes, volunteers, and staff in action.
“Taking a lot of photos, watching the staff post updates and helping behind the scenes showed me how much small details like photos for social media make a big difference in events,” Kira said.
Students highlighted key moments, recognizing sponsors, and sharing athlete achievements in real time on social. Their coverage extended the reach of the event beyond those physically present and helped build excitement and visibility for the program.
Teamwork and Event Execution
Throughout the day, students rotated through roles and supported one another to ensure every aspect of the event ran smoothly. From assisting with set up and breakdown to stepping in when lines grew long or schedules shifted, they demonstrated adaptability and teamwork.
This collaboration mirrored what happens in professional sports settings, where multiple departments must work together seamlessly. Students saw first-hand how preparation, communication, and flexibility contribute to a successful event experience.
The event was more than just a volunteer opportunity. It served as a hands on learning experience that strengthened skills directly connected to their future careers.
Communicating with coaches and families improved their customer service abilities. Managing registration and auction logistics sharpened their organizational skills. Collaborating with peers and staff reinforced the importance of leadership and accountability.
